At the 1964 New York Auto Show, Ford’s GT40 prototype made its debut and would pave the way for the legendary race card that completed the famous 1-2-3 sweep at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966. This year, Ford paid tribute to the GT40 MK II cars by returning to the New York Auto Show for the first public appearance of its new 2022 Ford GT Holman Moody Edition.

The innovative spirit of the Holman Moody team played a crucial role in the original GT40’s race success. In 1965, Ford’s newly formed Le Mans committee had one goal – winning the 1966 Le Mans race. The Le Mans committee gave the Holman Moody race team the task of reworking the GT40 MK II in hopes of achieving their first Le Mans win.

To make the GT40 more competitive, the Holman Moody team redesigned the car’s brakes, suspension, and tire setups. The team also painted the race car in a distinctive Kandy Gold color with Day-Glo reddish highlights on the nose and flank.

As a tribute, Ford’s 2022 model features that signature gold-and-red livery, including Oxford White roundels with No. 5 gracing the hood, doors, and rear wing. Completing the exterior look is exposed gloss carbon fiber on the 20-inch wheels, front splitter, side sills, mirrors, and rear diffuser along with black-lacquered Brembo brake calipers with silver graphics and black lug nuts for a modernized appearance.

The cabin boasts special-edition carbon fiber elements on the door sills, console, and registers. Ebony Alcantara-wrapped carbon fiber seats feature gold stitching accents, and GT logos emboss the seats and head restraints. The instrument panel, headliner, pillars, and steering wheel also feature Ebony Alcantara. Gold accents and matte carbon fiber are found all over the interior.
