Ford has maintained a reputation as an automaker tough enough for law enforcement for a long time. From the venerable Crown Victoria to the Taurus and the Explorer, Ford vehicles have been used by police for a long time. For the sustainable age, Ford has shown the desire to continue as one of the top automakers for law enforcement. The brand has invested $30 billion through 2025 as it seeks to build its electric vehicle capabilities.
Most recently, Ford submitted its Mustang Mach E for testing as part of Michigan State University’s 2022 Model Year Police Evaluation. Already known for being a trailblazing American electric car, the Mustang Mach E won Car and Driver’s 2021 Electric Vehicle Car of the Year. Praised for its performance, efficiency, and comfort, it has now been chosen by Ford as the best possible electric car for law enforcement. Through this Pilot program, Ford will be better able to design purpose-built electric vehicles for police.
Michigan State isn’t the only area where Ford is testing an electric police car. In the UK, Ford has introduced another Mach-E concept, with many police agencies eagerly hoping to test it out. Through Ford’s years of experience building cars specifically for the police, law enforcement agencies can be assured that they will have baked useful features and their know-how into these cars.
As the world moves towards sustainability, electrification of vehicles is an important force in the market. What was once the domain of wealthy, market-leading buyers is trickling down to consumers, particularly those in the upscale market. Now, it is encouraging to see electric cars becoming mainstream across different sectors as well, and becoming useful as utility vehicles. Eventually, through this trend, we can transform transportation to be more environmentally friendly. Ford deserves recognition for becoming a trendsetter in the space. With the example they set, other manufacturers will hopefully contribute their own offerings to the electric car market.
