For the second consecutive year, Ford Mustang is celebrating being named the world’s best-selling sports car. Fans of the famous eye catching car will be excited to know it has also retained its title of best-selling sports coupe for an astonishing sixth straight year. According to the most recent vehicle registration data from IHS Markit, Mustang led every single one of its competitors in 2020, with a whopping 80,577 global sales for the year. This sales total makes up 15.1 percent of the sports coupe market, an increasing trend from 14.8 percent a year earlier.

Hau Thai-Tang, chief product platform and operations officer at Ford Motor Company reflected: “In a challenging year for the entire auto industry because of the global pandemic, Mustang performed very well, increasing its share in the global sports car segment.”

The Mustang is not the only sports car doing well, there was also a surge in sales of the high-performance Bullitt, Shelby GT350, Shelby GT350R, and Shelby GT500 models. With a 52.7 percent increase in sales of the high-performance Bullitt and Shelby variants in the past year, Ford continues to lead with success and ingenuity. The addition of the new 2021 Mustang Mach 1 to the lineup only further expands Ford’s victories with its limited-edition models.

In a combined effort, the United States and various European markets have helped Mustang retain its title as the top-selling sports car. The United States remains Mustang’s strongest global market, representing about 75 percent of total sales. Texas (8,600 vehicles), California (6,200 vehicles), and Florida (5,864 vehicles) remain the top U.S. markets.

Mustang’s 2020 sales in European markets were better than ever as well. According to Ford internal data, sales in Hungary were up 68.8 percent over 2019; sales in the Netherlands (38.5 percent), Denmark (12.5 percent), the Czech Republic (5.6 percent), and Austria (4 percent) all increased.

Although Ford Mustang is revered for its performance cars, it has exceeded expectations outside of the sports car and sports coupe segments as well. The all-new Mustang Mach-E all-electric SUV surpassed sales expectations in February and March on its way to opening 2021. It had extremely strong first-quarter retail sales totaling 6,614. Demand only increased in following months and in late March, the Mustang Mach-E units spent an average of only seven days on dealer lots.

Mustang exceeded sales expectations for several of its segments and has gone above and beyond to earn the back-to-back recognition as the world’s best-selling sports car and best-selling sports coupe title for its sixth consecutive year.
