Scouting the dunes of the Mojave and speeding through the sweltering heat has never been as empowering as it is with Ford’s brand new Bronco R race prototype. This vehicle is paying homage to the Bronco R’s historic 1969 win in the Baja 1000. 2019 marked the 50th anniversary of Rod Hall’s unduplicated victory in the 4x4 race, and Ford has not forgotten this incredible feat. The Bronco R will return to the Baja Peninsula for yet another go at the gruesome 1,000-mile off-road course. Ford is putting its prototype to the test on this gruesome desert challenge, but with the lightweight and simple design built for endurance, it’s difficult not to feel confident in the Bronco R’s powertrain and architecture.

So, what exactly can we expect of the Bronco R race prototype at its desert debut?

Externally, the vehicle has an ultra-wide stance emphasized by its compressed body height and long-travel suspension. Additionally, the prototype offers a lightweight composite body that includes numerous aero components that emphasize its ability and intent to perform. The iconic race car has a clamshell hood and a cut-roof design with the opportunity to use a second-row hatch for access. Not to mention, the race prototype pays homage to its first-generation Bronco models through clean body panels, as well as through its overall style and proportions.

Aesthetically, the prototype does not shy away from its identity with the “BRONCO” brand lettering boldly illustrating the grille sequence. The “R” is sharply emphasized through graphic treatment, and washers inscribed with the Bronco name secure the composite skin to the roll cage underneath it. On the rear panel and the wing, you will find the number “2069” stretching across. Racing in the 20’th class and inspired by the 19’69’ Bronco R, the prototype skips no details in honoring its legendary past. Red, white, and black coloring is accented by a blue space frame. From first glance, this prototype catches the eye even amid the Mojave heat.

From behind the wheel, the Bronco R prototype is quite race-focused, differing from its exterior. With lightweight off-road racing shells from Recaro and simplicity in every surface, the Bronco R races well while bringing to life the best aspects of the victorious Bronco R of 1969. To take things a step further, Ford has integrated a MoTeC data acquisition system which allows for measurement and analysis of the prototype’s performance in real-time.

According to Paul Wraith, the Bronco chief designer, he and his team have worked since July to integrate the best of new and old techniques into this vehicle. You will find the Bronco R race prototype at its world premiere next spring as a tribute to its conquering past. This prototype is no mirage.
