It’s time to say goodbye to the tiresome and trying experience of long drives. Ford Co-Pilot360 Technology is adding new offerings including Active Drive Assist, which allows for hands-free driving. Ford’s Co-Pilot360 Technology is a comprehensive collection of available driver-assist features, and the addition of new features aim to make drivers have a more seamless and connected experience on the road.

“The stress of long highway drives remains a huge issue for drivers around the world,” said Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer. “By introducing driver-assist technologies like Active Drive Assist, Ford’s version of hands-free driving, we’re allowing our customers to feel more confident whenever they’re behind the wheel.”

As the next evolution of Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering from Ford, Active Drive Assist is setting a precedent for itself by offering Hands-Free Mode. This keeps drivers connected on certain sections of pre-mapped divided highways to drive with their hands off the steering wheel. Available on more than 100,000 miles of divided highways in all 50 states and Canada, Hands-Free Mode allows drivers additional comfort on the road.

Not to mention the potential for more enhancements in the future.

The technology behind Hands-Free Mode, as well as hands-on Lane Centering Mode, involves an advanced infrared driver-facing camera that tracks eye gaze and head position. This ensures that drivers are still paying attention to the road while using these features. Functional on any road with lane lines, drivers are notified with visual prompts on their instrument cluster when they need to resume control of the vehicle or return their attention to the road. If the driver begins to lose focus, Active Drive Assist automatically warns and potentially slows the vehicle down until the driver is prepared to focus on the road once again. This is an asset to not only individuals on the road, but also overall highway safety.

Active Drive Assist with a driver-facing camera will grant drivers comfort and reduce stress on the roads while still communicating with drivers to keep them in control. It will be available across the Mustang Mach-E lineup and on select 2021 model year Ford vehicles.
