Across the United States, nearly half of drivers think synthetic oil isn't worth the extra cost. A survey of repair facilities shows a synthetic oil change costs over $30 more than a conventional oil change on average, to a total of about $64 more per year.

While a large part of the general population snubs synthetic oil, there is one subset that uses it almost exclusively: Service professionals.

About 83 percent of the experts who make their living fixing cars use synthetic oil for their personal vehicles—and a recent AAA study proves they're onto something.

Across eight industry-standard tests used to evaluate oil's ability to resist shear, prevent deposits and corrosion, and maintain flow and viscosity in extreme temperatures, synthetic oils performed about 47 percent better than conventional. AAA says that's enough to make up for the higher price by keeping engines in better condition for the long-term.
