This year, the 2022 Ford Explorer and Bronco Sport SUVs have earned an amazing feat: the TOP SAFETY PICK+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This award is the highest possible rating a candidate is able to receive from the independent, non-profit group.
The award is based on six crashworthiness tests conducted by the IIHS. The IIHS uses these tests to analyze the safety in all areas of the vehicle; the tests include driver- and passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints.

Lastly, the vehicles must receive a good or acceptable rating when it comes to its headlights. This must be standard on all models, across all trim levels.
